“I have installed my King on Zion, my holy hill. I will proclaim the decree of the LORD : He said to me, “You are my Son; today I have become your Father. Ask of me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession.(Psalm 2:6-8)”
At the age of 16 she won 3 million dollars in the lottery and squandered almost all of it in six years on fast and frivolous living. Callie Rogers says she couldn’t handle going from having nothing to suddenly being rich. She became so depressed that she tried to kill herself 3 times. Now Callie works 3 cleaning jobs to make ends meet. She says, “Winning the lottery has ruined my life. I wish I had never one.”
I’ve rarely played the lottery, but I confess I have. I’ve done so feeling a little guilty because among many Christians it is considered a poor use of God’s money, even gambling. What made me think winning the lottery would solve my problems? The answer, I believe, is that I wasn’t willing to accept the Lordship of Christ over my situation. I sought to conjure up some solution that didn’t really involve the Jesus, although I probably prayed I would win! Had I won, it probably wouldn’t have done Him any honor, and might even have dishonored Him.
Trying to find life without Jesus is nothing new. In His day people thought they could find life outside of Him. They even thought that Bible study would do it, all the time missing that the work of Jesus was the whole point of the Scriptures (John 5: 39,40). They obstinately refused to come to Him.
Jesus is in charge. We ought to check out our plans with Him before we run with them.
