“How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them (Psalm 139:7)!”
In an episode of the popular medical series House, a patient is struggling for control of himself. A physical condition is causing one part of his brain to control the other part. The part that wants to control him is capricious. It causes him to throw things, play air guitar and even hit his girlfriend. The “good” part of his brain is frustrated at the behavior of the other part, as are the doctors and the patient’s lady.
We face a similar battle as Christians. We have the mind of Christ, but a part of us wants to live based on the world’s values. We get caught up in personalities instead of Jesus. We maintain control with money and other things instead of trusting Jesus for our lives. We wrestle with our thoughts instread of relying on God’s love.
But the apostle Paul said to build our lives on a foundation of Jesus Christ (I Corinthians 3:11). By relying on His thoughts and His wisdom, we gain a lot of benefits money can’t buy: the favor of God and people, God’s guidance, and better health (Proverbs 3:1-8). God’s thoughts are better than jewelry. Guarding our minds with God’s wisdom is like wearing a beatiful strand around the neck (Proverbs 3:21,22).
Today is Friday the 13th and it is a sure thing that the media and people will be thinking about superstitions and “bad luck”. I’d rather make my own “luck” and better myself with the thoughts of God instead of paying attention to silly superstitions that would make me want to believe their is a higher power than Him.
